A sporting variant, the XR4i, offered neat touches like a biplane rear spoiler, factory ground effects, and the 150hp, 2.8-liter "Cologne" V-6. In the early days of Sierra, a considerable number of sporting XR variants were built--the XR4i and later the all-wheel-drive XR4x4. More than 110,000 XR variants rolled out of European assembly plants.

More of a hint of the future RS Cosworth than a copy. Ford had high hopes for the XR4i, but they were hopes that would never be fulfilled.

The Sierra XR4i may not have the pedigree of a BMW and certainly has not the good looks, but as a value-for-money package it should worry some of the upmarket competition considerably. The recipe for the XR4i was entirely predictable, putting the Cologne 2.8-litre push-rod V6 into the engine bay, rated at 150 b.h.p. DIN and coupled to the rear wheels by the latest close-ratio 5-speed gearbox.
