The Alaska State Flag was created in a design contest held in 1927, during the territorial period. The winning design was created by Benny Benson, who was only 13 years old at the time. His design was selected to represent the state's unique identity, and it continued to be the official flag when Alaska achieved statehood in 1959..

The Alaska state flag (selected for its simplicity, originality, and symbolism) was created by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old 7th grader from an orphanage in Seward, Alaska (John Bell Bensona; 1913-1972). Seward honors him with a monument on 3rd Avenue. Benny entered a flag design contest to create a symbol for the territory of Alaska.
